Our School
Alma Mater Education’s first school is situated in a very rural location about 1½ hours from the city of Kumasi, in the Ashanti region of Ghana. Established in 2015, the school provides comprehensive secondary education for up to 550 students across three year groups, with the capacity for more than 400 living full-time in on-site boarding facilities.
Our Educational Model
Alma Mater Education has developed an inclusive and student-focused approach to ensure that our students reach their maximum potential. By encouraging a learning environment that is open and collaborative, the onus is placed on our staff to create innovative ways of teaching the curriculum, rather than placing extreme pressure on students to perform.
Deviating from the ROTE approach adopted in most other schools in Ghana, at Alma Mater we encourage student participation and public speaking, and use practical lessons as much as possible. In Agriculture, Business, Science and Home Economics, our students work with our farm staff to incorporate the land around the school into their learning, and this is proving to be hugely beneficial to both parties.
Finally, educational attainment often comes down to the simplest things – access to textbooks, for example. Often students just don’t have the funds to purchase textbooks, and inevitably their grades suffer hugely as a result. We provide all textbooks for free and encourage students to use them as much as they want to.
Wioso Senior High teaches up to 550 pupils per year with capacity for 400 living on-site in boarding facilities.
The School Meals Programme
Our school is situated in an area that experiences a considerable dry season, during which families often have to cut down on their meals to ration food. It is vitally important that pupils are not hungry when trying to study, which is why we place a huge emphasis on providing school meals.
Facilities
We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved in the decade since conception. Wioso Senior High began as a single classroom block, to which we added further classrooms, then a boarding house, a science lab, a home-economics lab, a new kitchen and food storage facility, and more recently a boys’ boarding housing, and an extra storey on the girls’ dormitory following. Our next ambition is to enhance our on-site sports facilities and to create additional classrooms.
